That said (referring to previous post)...
Usually it was just the lowlifes and unskilled laborers that went to sea. So don't give them too much credit, though there are accounts of pirates having connection with royalty, and some pirates being educated or even landowners.

By "accounts of pirates having connection with royalty," do you mean "Pirates of Penzance?"

    "O I am a Pirate King...."

I saw a special on like the biography channel or Discovery Times channel or something like that. It was about Blackbeard the Pirate (Edward Teach). After Blackbeard went "legitimate," had his own land, mansion, wife, and was friends with the local Mayor (who would picnic with Teach), he moored his boat in a secret location so he could still plunder when he felt the need. Well, a British Naval Commander of some sort, I forgot who, but it was basically Blackbeard's rival, captured one of Blackbeard's crew and tortured him for a couple years. This crewmate had always bragged that back in france he had connections with some of the royalty. Anyway, he was marked for death after finally giving up the location of Blackbeard's ship. But before he could be executed, word from French Royalty came that he was to be pardoned and sent back to France.

Robert Maynard was the name of the British Lieutenant who was after Blackbeard.
